Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville Named a Stop the Bleed Center by Department of Defense
3/31/2022
CLARKSVILLE, TN – Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville is now recognized by the Department of Defense and the American College of Surgeons as a STOP THE BLEED® Designated Center. STOP THE BLEED® is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. It encourages bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville is the only hospital in Tennessee to obtain STOP THE BLEED® designation and is also in the top 15% of the southeast region for STOP THE BLEED® education.
STOP THE BLEED® was launched in October of 2015 by the White House and the American College of Surgeons with a call to action to begin training more people to become immediate responders until professional help arrives. There are multiple ways to control bleeding in an emergency, however, it is only recently that tourniquets have been re-embraced for their life-saving potential. The adoption of the STOP THE BLEED® program by the civilian community was influenced by world events. In 2012, 28 people were casualties from a tragic mass shooting. Some of these casualties may have been prevented using STOP THE BLEED® Techniques.
The program was brought to Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville in 2019. Over 650 individuals have been trained in STOP THE BLEED® since its introduction to the communities served by Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville. Training is offered in many locations including recreation and educational centers, as well as community events. James Perras, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville, serves as the Champion and facilitator for STOP THE BLEED®.
Perras states, “This is free education. The STOP THE BLEED® certification only takes an hour of your time. STOP THE BLEED® can be learned at all ages and can be completed quickly. We have trained many individuals at churches, schools, and youth organizations. This is important and everyone should learn this information, as it may save a life. Do not be afraid to act!”
