Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville Performs First Augmented Reality Shoulder Replacement in Tennessee

CLARKSVILLE, Tennessee, August 15, 2025 – Dr. Lucas Teske and the team at Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville have performed the first shoulder replacement surgery in Tennessee utilizing an augmented reality surgical application. Surgeons developed the new technology to perform the surgery because patients may experience a better fit and function, leading to a faster recovery and return to everyday activities.
Using advanced 3D planning tools before the surgery, a real-time surgical instrument guidance system, and augmented reality smart glasses, Dr. Teske and the team performed a personalized procedure based on the patient’s unique anatomy and biomechanics. The augmented reality “smart glasses” allowed Dr. Teske to overlay and view digital scans over the patient’s actual anatomy during the surgery. This enhanced visualization and control during the procedure and enhanced precision.
“Implantation is the crucial point of shoulder replacement surgery. The 3D planning tools and augmented reality helps us to easily visualize the bone’s shape and precisely implant the replacement as we planned.
